In 1871, the large illustrated edition of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea, Jules Verne's most famous novel, was published.
The novel was first circulated in serial form in the Magasin d'éducation et de récréation from the 20th March 1869 to the 20th June 1870.
.Which one of Jules Verne’s many extraordinary journeys is the most extraordinary? Surely Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.
The novel was very dear to Jules Verne, who wrote to his editor on 28 March 1868: 'Oh! My dear Hetzel, if I fail in writing this book, I shall never recover. Never before have I had my hands on such a beautiful topic!'
The etchings, presented to the public for the very first time in this luxury edition, were found in an early Magasin edition. Signed by Alphonse de Neuville and Edouard Riou, these etchings are the work of the renowned wood engraver Henri Théophile Hildibrand -- an artist known for his work with Gustave Doré.
The manuscript, restored and published for the very first time, invites the reader to a unique behind-the-scenes experience, an immersion into the fantastic world of Verne.
Verne’s handwriting is neat and elegant. He allows large open margins for legible and methodical edits, additions, and corrections.
