The text was published simultaneously in Paris, Geneva and Amsterdam in January 1759. It enjoyed an immediate success: 6000 copies were sold in one month in Paris, and a total of 20000 copies were distributed that same year.
Long considered lost and rediscovered in 1957, the manuscript allows us to peek behind the scenes of Voltaire's literary creation.
For years, everybody (including Voltaire specialists) thought this manuscript lost. It was found in 1957, in the vast archives of the Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal.
