Hand numbered from 1 to 1,000
Drafted entirely on the back of printed sheets from Asfnor (the company which employed the novelist as an engineer at that time), the original manuscript of the cult novel, an ode to love, is embellished with Boris Vian's preparatory notes, drawings and sketches.
The manuscript dates from the 10th March 1946, the date of the author's twenty-sixth birthday.
Boris Vian hand dated his manuscript the afternoon of his 26th birthday, 10 March 1946.
Employed at the time as an engineer for ANFOR (l’Association Française de Normalisation) Vian used his office desk as a scriptorium, its drawer as a foot rest, and the association's business paper as a canvas. Each page of the manuscript is double-sided: the draft for the novel on one side and work from his day-job on the other.
Vian’s preparatory notes are included in the backmatter of this deluxe edition. These notes offer the reader exclusive access into Boris Vian’s remarkable literary universe.
