First published in serial form in the journal La Revue de Paris at the end of 1856, the work then appeared in a single volume, published by Michel Lévy.
From June 1851 to April 1856, Flaubert wrote no less than 4456 pages, but ultimately kept no more than 470, which are reproduced in this beautiful facsimile.
Likely inspired by a local news story (perhaps about Eugène Delamare, a medical doctor who found himself buried in debt in the wake of his young adulterine wife’s suicide), Flaubert began the five-year project of writing Madame Bovary, the ultimate precursor to the modern novel.
Flaubert, the novelist who wanted “a book without exterior attachments […] a book that would have almost no subject or at least in which the subject would be almost invisible”, meticulously worked and reworked his chapters. Concerned with the rhythm and musicality of his sentences, he repeated them to himself out loud, and emended them, often referring back to his early drafts which served as blueprints for his manuscripts (cf. the backmatter of our edition).
Madame Bovary first appeared in October 1856, published as a serial in La Revue de Paris, heavily cut with entire passages censured to the public. Even so, the text immediately generated scandal: Flaubert was accused of infringement upon public and religious morality, only to be acquitted in February 1857. Two months later, the novel became a bestseller.
This intimate preface, written by Jacques Weber, plunges the reader back into the world of Madame Bovary and the ferocity of a Flaubert implicitly haunted by what would soon become his masterpiece.
This edition will be released in two distinct print runs : the first, red, numbered from 1 to 1,000, and the second, ivory colored, not numbered. Each book was assembled at Les ateliers Babouot, in Lagny-sur-Marne. Each slipcase is handmade.
